Don’t look now, but Paul Giamatti may have a hit on his hands.
The uber-talented actor isn’t box office catnip. If he were, the terrific “Barney’s Version” would have received far more love. But his latest film, “Win Win,” is making a nice chunk of change in very limited release – more than $2 million so far from just 149 screens nationwide.
The film opens wider tomorrow (April 8), and it’s engaging enough to pad those numbers considerably. “Win Win,” directed by underrated filmmaker Tom McCarthy (“The Station Agent”), brims with grounded humor and wonderful performances. It’s the indie film mainstream audiences can throw their arms around.
Let’s hope they continue to do so this weekend. If an indie charmer like “Win Win” can’t find a bigger audience, what are the odds more challenging, and obscure, indie fare ever will?

I’ve been a fan of Giamatti’s since he played Howard Stern’s nemesis in “Private Parts” and look forward to everything he does. He’s one of those actors you can always rely on to give a great performance.
Love Giamatti! Private Parts, Sideways, Duplicity, Shoot ‘Em Up. He’s just a very versatile actor. Hope he finally gets some fan love.
“Pig Vomit” from Stern’s Private Parts…he nailed that role and made me a loyal fan ever since…even including “Fred Claus”.
Giamatti is amazing. Agreed that “Pig Vomit” was memorable. Actually I found that whole film rather good. But Giamatti has been great in just about everything I’ve seen him in. Save Sideways, and I wouldn’t blame Giamatti for that, as much as the role.
I still think his best work was John Adams. And yes, I am looking forward to this film. Plus, it has Melanie Lynskey, who is always a favorite in just about every role I’ve seen her in.
