Comedy Awards stumble out of the gate

The Oscars typically ignore comedies not associated with Woody Allen.

Yes, Kevin Kline, Mira Sorvino and Marisa Tomei all nabbed Oscars for their comedic performances, but too often great comedies get overlooked in favor of more “serious” fare.

That’s where the First Annual Comedy Awards come in. The event, co-sponsored by Comedy Central and MTV, broadcast its premiere gala April 10 (the ceremony was taped last month).

The world doesn’t need another awards show, but honoring overlooked comedies does make sense. But 2010 was a pretty lousy year for screen comedies, and the films which walked away with Comedy Award trophies hardly reflect the best of a pretty sorry lot.

  • Best Comedy – “The Other Guys”
  • Best Comedy Screenplay – “Hot Tub Time Machine”
  • Best Comedy Actor, Film – Zach Galifianakis, “Dinner for Schmucks”

Need we go any further?

Screen comedy deserves better.

Thats a pretty sad list. I mean, RED came out last year, and let’s be honest, it was more of a comedy than action flick. And unlike “The Other Guys” it was actually funny.

But to “The Other Guys” credit, it did have Michael Keaton. Frankly I would have liked to have seen more of him, Sam Jackson and the Rock than Will Ferrel. Plus the film couldn’t hide it’s contempt for its audience, which is always a deal breaker.

My first thought when I say the TV Ad for it was ” Geez another awards show to give themselves trophies”. Yuck I passed.

Best Screenplay was Hot Tub Time Machine??? I think that is the saddest thing I have ever heard. (Regarding movies and/or comedy, of course.)
