One for all and all for one (minus Charlie Sheen’s Tiger Juice)

One for all and all for one (minus Charlie Sheen’s Tiger Juice)

The reboot machine must be working over time these days.

The latest classic property getting a 21st century spit polish is “The Three Musketeers.” The last “Musketeer” gathering came in 1993, as Messrs. Sheen, Sutherland and O’Donnell clanged their foils together in a heroic salute.

The new “Three Musketeers,” heading our way in October, looks very much like a product of our age judging by its new trailer. You’ve got “Matrix” style action, 3-D visuals and a comely Milla Jovovich with nary a zombie in sight.

The new “Musketeers” features Orlando Bloom, Logan Lerman and Christoph Waltz. Let’s just hope Bryan Adams isn’t dusting off his guitar for the soundtrack.

Oooo, Matthew MacFayden, count me in. And I liked the look of this classy tough girl part for Milla Jovovich. I was hoping Christoph Waltz might have a chance at a hero role for a change, but as Richelieu, I guess it is not his turn yet.

I don’t necessarily consider “having another shot at adapting a classic” a reboot, though this certainly is a short interval between shots. But it does kinda irritate me that they’re not adapting other things; there’s whole swaths of Scott and Stevenson that’ve never made movies, but could be good ones.

If there are small women fighting and winning over large men with swords, the film must have come from the PC uber alles period of American film.

It’s quite possible to have a “classy tough girl” part without destroying believability, just give her a brace of pistols – problem solved.

I have always had an affinity for the Three Musketeers, both in films and the book. Not many have even come close to the classic with Michael York and Oliver Reed in the 70’s.

This version seems to have promise in that it looks period and the weapons and costumes are correct. I like the actors portraying the main characters as well, they fight the descriptions in the book and have the same attitude as well. Now if they don’t go over board with the fighting styles and pyrotech explosions then it should be enjoyable.
