‘Cars 2′ trailer revs up Summer season

Cars 2 one sheetLil’ WWTW slurps up “Cars” juice boxes, plays on a “Cars” slippity slide thang and watches “Cars” the movie like he’s in a trance.

And “Cars” stands as one of the least beloved Pixar pictures.

“Cars 2″ will try to improve upon the original model starting June 24. The film’s latest trailer just hit the web today, and from the initial glimpse it seems the film will at least match its non-Pixar peers. We get plenty of Mater, voiced by Larry the Cable Guy, and Michael Caine playing a smooth as silk British operative. Why Caine hasn’t done more vocal work is a mystery.

It all begs the question, where does “Cars” stand in the Pixar pantheon? And are you psyched to see a sequel to a film that underwhelmed many, toddlers notwithstanding?

My son loves Monsters, Inc the most, and then Cars, so we’ll definitely see it. One thing they got right was the music. Our Cars CD has been in heavy rotation, and even nanna (grandma) loves it.

It’s weird that Cars is one of their less-popular movies, because it’s one of their best. But then, the only two Pixar movies I can say anything against are Bug’s Life and the Incredibles, and the Incredibles, though it does have that tin-eared elitism, balances it (partially) with its treatment of family.

One thing I like about Cars is the Route 66, Googie/Populuxe aesthetic in it. With all its flaws, and it really did have some, the culture of the 1950s had a very real ideal—it was mostly the “American Dream”, but with a more mature version of the 19th Century’s technological optimism.

It’s not where it stand wrt Pixar films, it’s where it stands wrt to the rest of the horrible drek out there. Which makes it a “must see”.

I have to agree with K. Criticizing “Cars 2″ is like criticizing a FabergĂ© egg for not having enough gems when is still worth more than all the cubic zirconium in the world.

I personally really enjoyed “Cars” (even though I’m about the furthest thing from a NASCAR fan you can find). When they did the montage about the highway bypassing Radiator Springs and an entire way of life getting left behind in the wake of progress, I admit that I teared up a bit. Our five-year-old son LOVES “Cars” though, and has been following each new trailer with interest, which makes this a must see for us.
