A few years ago we could safely say there are quite enough award shows as is, thank you very much.
Now Spike TV’s “Guy’s Choice” makes it official.
The fifth annual – fifth! – “Guy’s Choice awards ceremony went down over the weekend, but the event will be broadcast 9 p.m. EST June 10 on, of course, Spike TV. If there’s one thing guys love, is gathering with their beer-bellied buds and watching awards shows.
“Ooh, look who Mark Wahlberg is wearing!”
And yet Spike TV soldiers on, even though the next time I watch the channel could be my first. Channel surfing doesn’t count. I wonder if I’m alone here. For those still interested, the ceremony includes such vital categories as “Guy Movie of the Year,” “Funniest M.F.,” “Decade of Hotness” and, of course, “Holy Grail of Hot.”

Spike TV and G4 are in a contest to see which can decay into irrelevance the fastest, though being dropped by DirecTV probably puts G4 in the lead. Of course, since Spike could argue that all the crap they put on probably appeals to some dude, somewhere, it’s a little harder for them—G4 had a major advantage in the suckiness races, since X-Play’s the only thing in the lineup that’s actually about video games.
But, huh, other than UFC (not to spoil anything, but whoever’s better at ground-fighting always wins), is there anything on Spike? Gimme a sec to check Wikipedia: a second-string pro wrestling franchise (and first string is already the bottom of the barrel), reruns of CSI (the Law and Order for people who flunked high school science) and Unsolved Mysteries (the supermarket tabloid for people who don’t like to read). Cripes, they broadcast Australian rugby in ‘09: that makes an award show targeted at dudes look like a brilliant programming choice.
Wow, I actually feel bad making fun of them, that’s how pitiful they are.
Wait, you forgot the occasional Star Trek Voyager reruns!
Seriously, I’m not sure what’s worse. The fact that these networks exist only to appeal to the lowest among us, or the fact that I know people who view this kind of trash and consider it quality.
What do you think is worse?
i don’t mind watching trash … I used to watch Gilligan’s Island after school as a brain destressing activity!
But the whole stereotypical ‘this is what guys like’ approach leaves me cold.
I confess to watching Spike, primarily for the weekend automotive shows, which are pretty damn good if you like cars.
