Why I’m worried about the ‘Human Centipede’ sequel

Human Centipede Dieter Laser

I’m more than a little embarrassed to say I can’t wait to see “The Human Centipede Part 2 [Full Sequence].”

The sequel to one of the more disturbing horror film ever made hits theaters next month, and the only glimpses we’ve seen of it so far are a pair of gimmicky teaser trailers.

Mystery is great, but I’m concerned the film will live up to what critics hated about the original. Yes, the first film was gross, upsetting and morally repugnant, qualities it should be noted other fine horror films also share.

I saw something different while watching “The Human Centipede.”

The film featured a bravura performance by Dieter Laser as the mad surgeon who fuses three victims together in centipede fashion. But writer/director Tom Six also made sure his film exploded horror movie conventions, like the annoying banter which kicks off the film, without ignoring essential horror elements like tension, pacing and shock value.

Everything we’ve heard so far about the sequel indicates shock factor will outweigh everything else. The folks behind Part 2 are rallying behind the fact that it’s being banned in the U.K. due to its content.

That’s a fine ad campaign for a micro-indie film, and it will draw more than a few curiosity seekers into theaters. But what will leave them giddy is seeing a tightly constructed movie, the kind they got with the first “Centipede.”

I found the first film almost unbearably tedious. It had nothing going for it aside from its admittedly unique premise. It’s hard to imagine falling for it again. Of course I’m not 14 anymore, so the fact that the UK banned it doesn’t stir my youthful longings for transgressive material.

I just saw this trailer on yahoo and I’m already disturbed by just the trailer alone. Can I even watch this film? Probably not! Seriously though I never even heard of this film series before and they are already on number 2. Was the original that successful?

I didn’t see it all the way through. I know I gave up watching before anyone was grafted to anyone else. It was just so damn boring. The friend I was watching it with kept going in and out of sleep after a few minutes in. I told her we should’ve watched “Evil Dead” instead, but no…

Personally, instead of a sequel, I’ll just watch that “South Park” episode again.

I am worried about this film. I am going back and forth trying to decided should I watch it just so I could review it? I don’t know. I am amazed that someone would allow him to make these types of films. I don’t know…scary.
